A former music and arts conservatory, this historic property has always had a higher calling. Celeste of St. Paul has been welcoming guests since 2020, and has raised the standard of comfort and service among all Twin Cities hotels to an entirely new level.
“It was a very important building at one point and it’s going to be important again isn’t it.” said Sister Brigid McDonald, a retired nun. She’s one of about a dozen retired nuns who participated in a sister sleepover on October 21, 2019 at the place they used to call home, two days before the Celeste opened to the public.

Every Nun Has A Past
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet not only lived and taught in this Beaux-Arts landmark, they built it. And under the guidance of Mother Celestine Howard, St. Agatha’s Conservatory of Music and Art became Minnesota’s premier fine arts academy.
A Convent In The Sky
Founded in 1884, St. Agatha’s grew steadily, prompting the Order to construct a facility that, upon completion in 1909, accommodated several hundred students, and on its upper floors, housed the nuns. Among the copper-corniced structure’s distinguishing features were rare exterior, curving double staircase leading to the main entrance, and a sixth-floor loggia providing open-air recreational space for the sisters.
“As a building, I was just amazed. They were able to keep the essence of the building and have it so profoundly modern and good looking,” said Sister McDonald
Angels in Architecture
At its peak, St. Agetha’s had 1100 students. Along with offices, the first floor housed parlors, studies, a library and infirmary. Art classrooms and a chapel occupied the second level, and the upper floors were used for the convent. Among the artwork that adorned St. Agatha’s were replicas of Renaissance masterpieces painted by the sister during their studies abroad.
A New Era Begins
After St. Agatha’s Conservatory closed in 1962, the building housed offices as well as classrooms and administrative facilities for the McNally School of Music. In 2017, Rebound Hospitality purchased this National Historic Landmark property and set about restoring the structure to its original glory.
“I hope it will contribute to life in St. Paul in a different way, It was meant for community. The spirit of community resounds here.” said Sister McDonald.
